Great Beginnings

It began with a great-big-bang,
At least - so far as we can tell,
What came before the gods sang,
Before heavens and before hells,
There at the end of beginnings,
How did this infinite expanse,
Grow from the size of a grass clipping,
Was it merely an act of chance,
Or perhaps our great expansion,
Came about by some great collapse,
An old universe abandoned,
Only to start up again - relapsed,
Born again from some cosmic death,
Like a Big-Bang but in rewind,
These tendrils of creation's breath,
From nebulae that trail behind,
Blown clear across the universe,
Trailing from celestial homes,
Cosmic reactions interspersed,
To form these planetary thrones,
Of which we sit upon today,
Staring up at stars above us,
Retelling the tales that they portray,
These stories that don't heed time's rust.
